Patchwork Primers Unit Studies Appeal to Special Needs Families

Author Sharon Wilharm was looking for a homeschool unit study that would work for her dyslexic daughter. When she couldn't find one she liked, she wrote her own. Now other families are finding that Patchwork Primers unit studies work for a variety of special needs students.

ADHD students make up the majority of special needs students using Patchwork Primers. Aspherger's Syndrome and dyslexia follow close behind.

"I was seriously considering putting my 9-year-old in school next year," said Connie, mother of a son with ADHD and Aspherger's Syndrome. "However, after just a short time of browsing through Patchwork Primers, not only do I not want to put him in school, but I am so excited about starting school in August!"

Parents appreciate the short Charlotte Mason style lessons and the ability to tailor their resources based on the student's interests and abilities.

Since most homeschooling families have more than one child, unit studies like Patchwork Primers are a great way to teach children of varying levels at the same time. While Patchwork Primers studies are designed to be challenging, they can be adapted for younger children or struggling learners. Even families with Down Syndrome children are finding they can be incorporated into parts of the studies.

"The great thing about unit studies," says author Sharon Wilharm, "is that YOU control your studies. YOU choose the resources and activities that work for your family. And if you get caught going down little rabbit trails, well, that's alright, too. You control your curriculum rather than it controlling you."

Patchwork Primers currently has two volumes available. Volume 1, American Dream, is based on American history from the Native Americans to the Civil War. Volume 2, Inventions and Discoveries, is based on famous inventions. Volume 3, coming out summer 2003, will be People and Places in Bible Times.

Patchwork Primers is the official sponsor of National Homeschool Month.
