Help Now Available for College Students and Graduates Interested in Social Work Graduate School-- THE SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICANT'S HANDBOOK: The Complete Guide to Selecting and Applying to MSW Programs

If recent reports from the Web site Gradschools.com are a reflection of the current interest in social work graduate school, Reyes' book will be a welcome addition to the graduate admissions guide genre. During the period from January to March 2002, social work was in the top 5 curriculum areas to be searched on the site. Several other areas in the top 20 relate to social work, including mental health therapy and public policy.

Reyes, a social work administrator who formerly served as the admissions director at one of the nation's most selective graduate schools of social work, provides inside tips that the general graduate school guides cannot.

Career paths for people with master's degrees in social work are varied, ranging from case worker to politician to college professor. Congressman Ciro D. Rodriguez, himself a master's level social worker, has firsthand experience in all three of these areas. He wrote in the Foreword to THE SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICANT'S HANDBOOK, "Pursuing a career in social work, specifically at the Master's degree level, deserves serious reflection, research and the utilization of as many informational resources as you can find. Mr. Jesús Reyes' book provides you with both general information and specific advice on how to make an informed choice on which educational institution to attend. I urge you to give yourself time to digest the information provided by Mr. Reyes and go with your heart, wherein your strength lies."

Part I of the book discusses what applicants should look for in schools, while Part II outlines what schools look for in applicants. Part III, Sources for Your Search, contains a complete directory listing of all U.S. graduate schools that are accredited by, or in candidacy for accreditation by, the Council on Social Work Education. There is also a listing of state social work licensing boards, with basic information about licensing requirements for each.

A highlight of THE SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICANT'S HANDBOOK that will not be found in any other resource is Appendix C, In Their Own Words. Graduate schools of social work were surveyed, and 93 (out of 146 accredited schools and 25 in candidacy) responded, on such issues as "tips for applicants," "common applicant mistakes," and general information on their programs (concentrations and special programs offered, tuition, financial aid, number of students and faculty, and more). Other appendices include an application tracking sheet, biographical statement worksheet, and a checklist to use when visiting schools. In addition, sugggestions to applicants from recently successful social work applicants and faculty are placed in boxes throughout the book.

THE SOCIAL WORK GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICANT'S HANDBOOK is now available from online and offline bookstores. The publisher invites social work graduate school applicants to visit its companion Web site (http://www.socialworkgradschool.com) and its main social work site at http://www.socialworker.com. The book is also available directly from the publisher online or by phone at 717-238-3787.
