More: New Horizons Preschool invites families to "Celebrate Unity Within The Community" in honor of Dr. King's birthday, at a free series of events at the Boulder Public Library on January 19, 2004 beginning at 1:00 pm. All events are free and open to the public. "Celebrate Unity Within The Community" is presented by New Horizons Cooperative Preschool and includes entertainment and participatory events.
The day begins with a traditional blessing by an American Indian Elder at the north Main Library entrance @ 1:00 P.M., followed by a Gospel Sing-Along led by Birdia Allen. Presentations begin on the main library stage at 1:30 with exhilarating West African dancing by LOGO LIGI. At 2:15 nationally renowned entertainer Opalanga Pugh brings to life the rich legacy of oral stories, and at 3:15, dance group Motion Underground will delight the crowd with breathtaking Hip-Hop, featuring head spinning, pop & locking and more!
The United Black Women of Boulder Valley will launch their new Youth Leadership Symposium with presentations by participants on the main stage from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Other activities include Birthday Cake and refreshments served at 2:45 pm, and a Community Read-Aloud, throughout the day featuring Boulder community leaders reading children's books honored with the Coretta Scott King Award. Children will be able to commemorate the day with their own work of art as Boulder's Family Learning Center hosts a variety of crafts activities. The RMPJC will host a rally with the Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB) on the courthouse lawn from 11-1pm, with a procession to the library to follow. The PBS documentary film "Matters of Race" offering an in-depth exploration of race in America will be shown throughout the day.
This event is also the kick-off of a series of educational workshops beginning in January for parents and professionals focusing upon issues related to cultural and developmental diversity. The half-day sessions are held for eight Saturdays and are taught by educational professionals and combine practical hands-on activities with discussions of current research and theory.
